Configuration Options of Norton Anti-Virus 2003:

Norton AntiVirus Options allow you to enable or disable features such as email scanning, and to set preferences for auto-updates and scanning preferences.

There are two ways to access the Configuration Options of NAV2003.

Method 1: System Tray

In the System Tray, right-click the Norton Anti-Virus icon and select the option Open Norton Anti-Virus from the menu.

Method 2: Options Button in NAV

With Norton Anti-Virus open, click the Options button at the top left, as shown in the following image.

Auto-Protect Options:

In the left-hand column, under System, click Auto-Protect to expand its menu.

There are four configuration screens related to the Auto-Protect feature.

The Auto-Protect screen lets you change your preferences for background monitoring of viruses.

The default recommended options are shown below.

In the left-hand column, under System, highlight Bloodhound.

Enabling heuristics may help NAV to protect against unknown viruses.

In the left-hand column, under System, highlight Advanced.

The Advanced Options pertain to the handling of floppy disks.

In the left-hand column, under System, highlight Exclusions.

The Auto-Protect Exclusion List determines which types of files to exclude from being auto-protected.

Script Blocking  Options:

In the left-hand column, under System, highlight Script Blocking.

Script blocking stops executable code in Web pages from damaging your computer.  The recommended defaults are shown below.

Manual Scan Options:

In the left-hand column, under System, highlight Manual Scan.

There are three configuration screens related to the Manual Scan feature.  The Manual Scan screen lets you change your preferences for running a scan yourself.

The default recommended options are shown below.

Enabling heuristics may help NAV to protect against unknown viruses.

The Exclusion List determines which types of files to exclude from being scanned.

Email Options:

Under Internet, in the left-hand column, highlight Email.

Email is the most common way in which computer viruses are spread, so you should typically have this turned on.

This Email Scanning applies to programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, Pegasus, etc.  Email attachments will be automatically scanned.

Tip:  If you are having problems with an email program, turn off NAV's Email Scanning to make sure NAV is not the culprit.

If you go to a website to check your email rather than using one of these programs, any attachments downloaded through Internet Explorer for example are seen as downloaded files rather than email attachments.  So, these settings do not apply to Web Mail. Turn on the auto-protect feature above to automatically scan these downloads.

Under Internet, in the left-hand column, highlight the Advanced sub-menu.

The Advanced Email Options let you change a few other settings.

Instant Messenger Options:

Under Internet, in the left-hand column, highlight Instant Messenger.

If you have Instant Messenger installed on your PC, NAV can protect against viruses being downloaded through file transfers from other IM users.  If none are installed, the options are grayed out, as shown below.

Live Update Options:

Under Internet, in the left-hand column, highlight LiveUpdate.

The Live Update options determine how NAV stays up to date.  The options are shown below.

Miscellaneous Options:

In the left-hand column, under Other, highlight Miscellaneous.

Some extra miscellaneous options are shown below.
