DUN Client & Control Panel Configurations

Configuring & Checking the Network Section of Control Panel:

Always check the Network section of the Control Panel when configuring or troubleshooting a dial-up network (DUN) connection.  You need to make sure that a dial-up adapter is installed with TCP/IP protocols. You also want to make sure that there are no conflicting settings in there.  There are 3 things to do in the Network section:
    Check for required components.
    Remove unnecessary components.
    Check for conflicting settings.

IMPORTANT:  Never click "OK" in the Network section of the Control Panel unless you are sure you have your Windows CD.  If you don't have your Windows CD, click here for help with determining if you already have the .cab files stored on your computer.

 

To access the Network properties, open the Control Panel by going to Start->Setting->Control Panel,

 

Then click the Network icon as shown in the middle right side of the Control Panel below.

Alternate Route: Click My Computer then Control Panel then Network .

Either route will bring you to the same Network screen below, which shows you all networking components installed on your computer. 

 

Check for required components.  

You need to make sure that a Dial-up Adapter is installed with TCP/IP protocols. Without these, you'll never get connected to the Internet.  Also, Client for Microsoft Networks needs to be installed and set as the Primary Network Login.  Without this, many programs such as Outlook Express, FrontPage, or BrowseBlast may not function properly.  Once the Client for Microsoft Networks is installed, you'll notice the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop.

In summary, your Internet connection needs the following 3 components installed:
    Client for Microsoft Networks  (Also, set as "Primary Network Logon" below the Add/Remove/Prop buttons)
    Dial-Up Adapter
    TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter

If you need to add a component, click the "add" button.  You will choose "adapter" to install the dial-up adapter, or "protocol" to install TCP/IP, or "client" to install Client For Microsoft Networks.  You will then get a prompt with two boxes.  Scroll down the box on the left to highlight "Microsoft" then double-click the appropriate component in the right box.  Screen shots for installing any of these 3 are shown on a special page.  

    DO NOT CLICK OK if you do not have your Win98 CD or .cab files.

 

Remove unnecessary components.  

Windows 95 and earlier version of Windows 98 added tons of extra, unnecessary adapters and protocols to the Network section of the Control Panel.  These include:
    Microsoft Family Logon
    Client for Novell Networks
    Dial-Up Adapter #2 for VPN Support
    TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter #2
    IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
    NetBEUI
    AOL Adapter
    TCP/IP -> AOL Adapter
Simply click on the undesired entry, then click the Remove button.

Note:  Don't worry about Ethernet cards, etc.  TCP/IP bound to a network adapter card (e.g. TCP/IP -> Intel Pro/100+ Adapter in picture below) is totally irrelevant to your modem connection to the internet.

IMPORTANT:  Do not click OK if you do not have your Win98 CD or .cab files.

 

Check for conflicting settings.  

Even though you've already setup the DUN properties with the DNS numbers, etc., there may be conflicting DNS settings in the Control Panel from a work connection or prior ISP.  Settings in the Network section will override settings in your DUN connection.   This is the topic of the rest of this page.

 

Once the proper components are installed, double-click on TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter (in the screen above) to configure the DNS settings, etc. Windows 98 users will get the warning window shown below. Windows 95 will go directly to the same configuration windows that Win98 users get after hitting "OK" in the warning window.

 

IP Address Tab:

You will see the window below.  It will always open under the IP Address tab.  It is best to leave this window set to "Obtain an IP address automatically."  Since your IP Address may change each time your computer dials up to the internet, any numbers on this screen will likely interfere with your connection to the Internet.  

Note:  Even if you have paid for a static IP address, it is best to set that address in the DUN properties rather than in the Network section of the Control Panel.  Otherwise, that IP address could conflict with other DUN connections to work or other ISPs in the event that you have more than one internet connection.

 

WINS Configuration Tab:

Click the "WINS Configuration" tab to make sure that WINS resolution is NOT ENABLED. Disable it if it is enabled.  Don't worry if it is set to use DHCP since this won't affect your connection.

 

Gateway Tab:

Click the "Gateway" tab to make sure that there are no gateways enabled.  Since the gateway may change each time your computer dials up to the internet, remove the gateway if it is installed.  Any numbers on this screen will likely interfere with your connection to the Internet.

Note:  Some DSL customers will have gateways assigned.  That gateway setting is not configured in TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter so don't worry about that.  DSL configurations are completely different from DUN configurations.

 

DNS Configuration Tab:

Click the "DNS Configuration" tab.  The screen on the left shows Disable DNS selected.  This is the best way to do it, since using another ISP's DNS settings may disable any Web surfing through our connection.    

You could place our DNS numbers in there (as shown on the right), but this is not recommended because these numbers will override DNS settings in all of your DUN connections, including those of any other ISP's you may still be using.  It is best to place the DNS settings in the DUN properties only (as described in the first section above).

If you do enable DNS through the Network section of Control Panel then set the host as your username. Don't worry about domain suffix search orders.

Typically, leave it set to "Disable DNS", as below.

 -OR- For some browsing problems, enter our DNS settings:

 

 

Hit "OK" -- !! ONLY if you have your Windows CD or .cab files !! -- and Windows will prompt you to restart the computer if any changes were made.

IMPORTANT:  Never click "OK" in the Network section of the Control Panel unless you are sure you have your Windows CD.  If you don't have your Windows CD, click here for help with determining if you already have the .cab files stored on your computer.

If you are still having problems surfing or connecting, try deleting the DUN connection and starting over with Make New Connection or running the inetwiz.  Then try reinstalling DUN and the Network components.  You remove dial-up adapter and TCP/IP in Control Panel -> Network.  You go to the Add/Remove programs section of Control Panel to reinstall Dial-Up Networking.
