Pulse Dialing vs. Tone Dialing:

If you live in an area where the phone lines still use Pulse Dialing rather than the newer Tone Dialing, you need to use Windows XP's Dialing Rules to switch to Pulse Dialing.

Click on Start and, in the right-hand column, select Connect to.  Choose Show all connections from the drop-down menu.

The Network Connections screen appears.

Right-click the connection icon and select Properties from the menu.

The following screen appears.

On the General Tab, place a check mark in front of Use Dialing Rules.

Then click the Dialing Rules button.

The following screen appears.

Click the Edit button.

The following screen appers.

At the bottom, you can change from Tone dialing to Pulse dialing.

Click OK when you're done.

Autodial problems:

Every now and then you may find your computer dialing up to the Internet on its own.  There is a simple fix for this.

Click on Start and, in the right-hand column, select Connect to.  Choose Show all connections from the drop-down menu.

The Network Connections screen appears:

Along the Toolbar at the top, click Advanced and select Dial-up Preferences from the drop-down menu.

The following screen appears:

Enable autodial by location = Uncheck all locations.
Always ask me before autodialing = Check this.

Click the OK button when finished and close any other windows..

Operator-Assisted Dialing problems:

Occasionally you'll get a screen like the one below:

This can be extremely irritating if it pops up every time you connect to the Internet.

Getting rid of this screen is simple.

Click on Start, and in the right-hand column click Connect to.  Select Show all connections from the drop-down menu.

The Network Connections screen appears:

Along the Toolbar at the top, click Advanced and uncheck Operator-Assisted Dialing in the drop-down menu.
