Creating a new newsgroup account in Outlook 2003:

Newsgroups are discussion groups.  They are similar to chats only they aren't necessarily in real time.  Newsgroups cover almost every subject imaginable, and therefore, appeal to a wide variety of people.  A newsgroup client functions they same way as an e-mail client.  Outlook utilizes Outlook Express' newsgroup functionality, but it brands the windows with Outlook's look.

By default, News doesn't appear in any menu in Outlook 2003.  You'll need to customize the menu first.  To do this, follow these steps:

On the Toolbar, click Tools and select Customize from the menu.

 

The Customize window appears.

Select the Commands tab.

In the left column, highlight Go.  In the right column, click and drag News up to the Go menu and hold it there until the menu expands.  After the menu expands, drop News anywhere in the list.

 

News now appears in the Go menu.

Click on News.

 

The Microsoft Outlook Newsreader opens.

On the Toolbar, click Tools and select Accounts from the menu.

 

The Internet Accounts window appears.

Towards the top, right corner, click the Add button and select News from the menu.

 

The Internet Connection Wizard appears.

Display Name  =  enter your name.

Click Next to continue.

 

E-mail address  =  enter the e-mail address of the account.

Note:  if you enter your true e-mail address, you may receive spam.

Click Next to continue.

 

Enabling NNTP Authentication:

News (NNTP) server  =  enter the name address of the news server.  It follows this format:  news.ispname.com.

Mark the box My news server requires me to log on.

Click Next to continue.

 

Account name  =  enter the username of your Internet connection (including the domain tail @ispname.com).  You should follow this format:  username@ispname.com.
Password  =  enter the password of your Internet connection.

Important:  passwords are case-sensitive.  Ensure the Caps Lock is disabled.

Check Remember password.

Important:  do NOT select Log on using 'Secure Password Authentication'.

Click Next to continue.

 

You're done creating the account.

Click Finish to complete the wizard.

 

The new account now appears under the News tab.

Click Close.

 

The following window should appear:

By clicking Yes, you'll download a list of newsgroups and subscribe to them.

 

The window should look something like the following:

 

After downloading the list of available newsgroups, you'll need to subscribe to the one that peak your interest.

Highlight a topic and click Subscribe or simply double click a topic to subscribe to it.

Click OK when you're finished.

 

Highlight the particular discussion and all the postings will be downloaded to your computer.

It will look similar to e-mail messages.

Click on a posting and the text will appear below.
