  Creating a new newsgroup account:

Newsgroups are chats or discussions that take place on the Internet and cover a wide variety of topics.  You download them just like e-mail.  You can also post (respond) to them to state your own view point or ask for additional information.

Mozilla Thunderbird comes with its own built-in newsgroup reader.  The following tutorial illustrates how to create a newsgroup account in Mozilla Thunderbird.

On the Toolbar, click Tools and select Account Settings from the menu.

The Account Settings window appears.

Towards the bottom-left corner, click Add Account.

The Account Wizard begins.

Select Newsgroup account.

Click Next to continue.

Your name  =  Enter your name.
Email Address  =  Enter your e-mail address.

Click Next to continue.

Newsgroup Server  =  Enter the name address of the news server:  news.ispname.com.

Click Next to continue.

Account Name  =  Enter a name for the account.  By default, Thunderbird gives the name of the account the name of the news server.  Name it anything you want.  If you have more than one account, give it a unique name.

Click Next to continue.

Your done with the initial configuration.  Verify the information you've entered.  Click 'Back' and modify the information if necessary.

Click Finish to complete the wizard.

Enabling NNTP Authentication:

We return to the Account Settings window.

NNTP authentication is required to post newsgroups.  If you do not have this enabled, you will not be able to log on.  This helps deter spammers from sending you junk mail.

In the left-hand column, locate the news account and highlight Server Settings.
To the right, check the box labeled Always request authentication when connecting to this server.

Click the OK button to close the window.
