Internet Setup Assistant:  For Macintosh Classic 8.5 - 9.2

Internet Setup Assistant: Overview:

Macintosh's Internet Setup Assistant (ISA) helps you to setup all of the Internet settings on your computer:
    1) Remote Access (ARA) - allows your computer to connect to the Internet using a phone line and modem.
    2) Modem - Setup your modem.
    3) TCP - allows the programs on your computer to communicate on the Internet.
    4) Outlook Express - a program to handle E-mail as well as Newsgroups.

The Internet Setup Assistant (ISA) came standard on Macs starting with version 8.5 and continuing through version 9.2.

 

To access the Internet Setup Assistant (ISA), open Macintosh Hard Disk.

Then, open the "Assistants" folder. You may need to click the little arrow to the left of the assistants folder so that it points downward to show you this program.

Note:  If you can't find the Internet Setup Assistant, you can still configure everything manually. 
    Use the links at the top of the page for help, or follow these links:

Once you've opened this assistant, the following window appears. Click Yes to start the setup process.

 

You probably already have an Internet account. If not, call your ISP to set it up and tell them that you need to setup your Macintosh. You don't really need a tech to help you with this easy program in most cases.

Click the Yes button to setup your internet connection.

 

Don't worry too much about the additional info in the following window, since most ISPs don't require all this. 

Just click the little arrow to the right of the "1" in the lower right corner to get started.

 

Give the connection a distinctive name.  Most people just name it after their ISP.

Select "Modem" at the bottom. This tutorial does not deal with LAN connectinos.

Click the arrow to the right of the "2" to continue.

 

Select your Modem by clicking on the little up/down arrows. If you have an internal modem located inside your computer, it will usually be a Global Village or an Apple Internal 56k modem.

The Port is usually the "internal modem" port if your modem is inside your computer and "external modem port" if the modem is outside of your computer.

You probably have a phone line that uses the Tone dialing rather thane Pulse dialing.

It's fairly rare for people to want the "Ignore dial tone" option so don't choose that unless you are sure that you are an exception.

Click the arrow to the right of the "3" when you are ready.

 

This is where you put in the phone number that you use to connect to your ISP. You can put *70, (including the asterisk * and the comma) in front of the phone number to disable call waiting. Only do this if the phone line to your computer has call waiting. If you have a second dedicated phone line for the computer then it is pretty unusual for that second line to have call waiting even if your regular phone line has that. You might also need to put a 9, (including the comma which is important) to access an outside line. This is most common in corporate phone systems and hotels. Most homes don't require that.

You also need to put in the login name that you use to connect to your ISP. It is probably cASe seNsITivE so be careful to get the capitalization correct. Most ISPs also require you to put @ispname.com on the end of the username to make sure that you route to the right place. Once you've done that, put in your password in the last box. That password is also CAse sENSitIve so make sure that you don't have your "caps lock" on.

Click the little arrow to the right of the "4" in the lower right corner to continue from here.

 

It is pretty rare for an ISP to require a "PPP connect script" and they will definitely let you know if you need that.
Select No and then click the arrow to the right of the "5" in the lower right hand corner to continue.

 

Select No, since ISP's almost never offer a dedicated IP address for dial-up Internet connections.

Click the arrow to the right of the "6" to continue.

 

This is where you put in your "DNS numbers." These can make surfing the Web work more efficiently.

Put in 209.210.176.8 with no spaces for the first number. There should be a second number such as 209.210.176.9. Leave the bottom box blank where it talks about a "domain name".

Click the arrow to the right of the "7" to continue.

 

Put your full e-mail address in the top box. Be careful not to put any extra spaces.

Put your e-mail password in the second box.
    Note: This password may differ from your general logon password.

Click the arrow to the right of the "8" to continue.

 

Even though you might not ordinarily add the extra part in your e-mail address after the @ sign, you need to put in your e-mail address in this format in the top box below: yourname@MAIL.ispname.com.

The second box will probably be something like mail.ispname.com.

Click the arrow to the right of the "9" when you are finished.

 

Your news server address will follow this format: news.ispname.com with your ISP info instead of the ispname.com part.

Click the arrow to the right of the "10" when you are finished.

 

If you have purchased Proxy Filtering from your ISP, choose Yes.

Otherwise, choose No in the following window.

Click the arrow to the right of the "11" when you have done so.

 

If you chose Yes in the above window, you will see the following window.

If you are paying for web filtering to prevent your kids from being exposed to adult content then you might need to put a checkmark in the box to the left of HTTP.

The host box is where you put in an "IP address" for the filtering. The proxy address is available from your ISP support center.

Click the arrow to the right of the "11" when you have done so.

 

You are almost finished. You can click the "Show Details" button to see the final settings.

Put a checkmark in the box to the left of Connect when finished by clicking on that box.

Then click the Go Ahead button to connect to the internet.

If you get any errors when connecting then write them down and call your ISP tech support group.
