SMTP Authentication (e-mail username) is required to send e-mail.

Creating new e-mail accounts:

Outlook Express is the e-mail program that comes with Office 2001 for the Macintosh.  It is very similar to Outlook 2000 and Outlook Express except that it has new features and design elements.

On the Toolbar, click Tools and select Accounts from the menu.

The Accounts window opens.

To add a new account, click the New button and select Mail.

The Account Setup Assistant may launch.

It is easier to Configure the account manually, so click the button at the bottom left.

The normal New Account screen appears.

Account type = POP

Click OK to continue.

Account Name = Give the account a name so you will recognize it later.

Personal Info:

Name  =  Enter your name.
Email Address  =  Enter your e-mail address.

Receiving Mail:

Account ID  =  Enter your e-mail username (everything before the @).
POP server = Incoming Server The Incoming (POP3) mail server usually follows this format:  mail.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

Sending Mail:

SMTP Server = Outgoing Server The Outgoing (SMTP) mail server usually follows this format: mail.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

SMTP Authentication:

SMTP authentication helps deter people from spamming you.  It's as simple as entering a username and password.  Without SMTP authentication, you will not be able to send e-mail.

Click the button under the SMTP server marked: Click here for advanced sending options.

An extra screen pops down, as shown below.

Place a checkmark in SMTP server requires authentication and place a dot in Log on using:

Account ID  =  Enter your e-mail username (everything before the @).
Password  =  Enter your password.

Select the Options tab.

The main feature we want to mention on the Options tab is the option to Leave a copy of message on server.

Don't put a checkmark in the option to "Leave a copy of each message on the server" because Outlook Express will start reporting that you don't have any new messages even when you do have new messages.  Also, this will fill-up your mailbox at your ISP and then you won't be able to get new messages.
