Key Settings:

News Server The News server usually follows this format: news.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

Note:  Your ISP may require you to enable NNTP authentication.

  Editing existing newsgroups accounts:

To edit existing newsgroups accounts, do the following:

On the Toolbar, click Mail and select Manage accounts from the menu.

The Manage accounts window opens.

Highlight the desired newsgroups account.

Click the Edit button.

Enabling NNTP Authentication:

NNTP authentication is an important part of your newsgroups account configuration.  Without it, you will not be able to post newsgroups.  This helps deter would-be spammers.  All that is required is a username and a password.

The Account properties window opens.

Select the Servers tab.

NNTP server:

Server  =  News Server The News server usually follows this format: news.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

Note:  Your ISP may require you to enable NNTP authentication.

Port number  =  This should be set to the default port 119.

Authentication  =  Select Auto from the drop-down menu.
Username  =  Enter the complete username of your dial-up account.
Password  =  Enter the e-mail account password.

Important:  Passwords are case-sensitive.  Ensure the Caps Lock is disabled.

Note:  If not completed already, do the same with the Outgoing SMTP server.

You now have created an account.

Click OK to exit the Account properties window.

Select the Incoming tab.

There are a few options on the Incoming tab of which you should take note.

Download message body when checking  =  With this option checked the whole posting will be downloaded.  This includes the body of the posting.  The best thing to do is to leave this unchecked.  Opera will only download the subject header.  You can verify if it is spam or a legitimate posting.

Check for new messages every #minutes  =  This is a great feature to enable.  While you're online, Opera will check, at the interval you specify, to see if you have e-mail.  You won't have to manually check.

Include account when checking manually  =  If this is not enabled, Opera will not check to see if you have newsgroups waiting on the server for this account.

Next, select the Outgoing tab.

Select the Outgoing tab.

Signature:  Whatever text you enter into the field, Opera will append to each e-mail you compose.  In this example, Opera entered 'Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/'.

Click the OK button to close the window.
