  Creating Message Filters:

Message filters can help you organize your e-mail messages as well as delete unwanted messages automatically.  They work in conjunction with folders.  To learn how to create folders, click the "Folders" link above.

In this example we'll create a message filter that will allow Thunderbird to automatically send e-mail to a specified folder.  Do the following:

On the Toolbar, click Tools and select Message Filters from the menu.

The Message Filters window appears.

Click the New button.

Filter name  =  give the filter a name.  Make it distinctive, especially if you plan on creating others.  In this example, we named the new filter "Family".

Under For incoming messages that, select Match any of the following.

Note the three fields.

In the first field, I selected Sender from the menu.
In the second field, I selected contains.
In the third field, I typed grandma@ispname.com.

This means that when the 'Sender' field of an e-mail 'contains' the word 'grandma@ispname.com', Thunderbird will perform some action.

Note:  You may add addtional e-mail addresses by clicking the More button.

Under the section Perform these actions, check the box Move to folder.

To the right, click the down arrow and select Local Folders -> Inbox -> "Desired folder" from the menus.  In this example, we selected the folder "Family".

You can now see the completed filter.

Any message that contains grandma@ispname.com as the sender will be automatically moved to the Family folder.

Click OK to save the filter and close the window.

We return to the Message Filters window.

You can see the new filter has been added to the list.  You can create as many as you need.

Click the red box with the 'X' to close the window.
