  Create Message Filters:

Filters are rules telling Mac Mail how to manage your e-mail.  They are used in conjunction with folders.  They can be used to send e-mail automatically to folders you create or eliminate e-mails you don't want.  In this tutorial, we'll create a filter that will send specific e-mails to the folder we created in the "Folders" tutorial:  "Family".

On the Toolbar, click Mail and select Preferences from the drop-down menu.

The Rules window appears.

Click the Add Rule button.

Description  =  Give the new rule a distinctive name.

If ? of the following conditions are met  =  Select the option any from the menu.

From the first menu, select the option From.
From the second menu, select the option Contains.
In the field provided, enter the "e-mail address" of a family member.

Click the + sign to add additional addresses to the rule.

Perform the following actions:

From the first menu, select the option Move Message.
to mailbox  =  Select the "Folder" in which you'd like Mail to store your filtered messages.  In this example, we selected the folder we created in the "Folders" tutorial:  Family.

Now Mail will move any e-mail containing the address grandma@ispname.com or grandpa@ispname.com to the Family folder.

Click the OK button.

The following prompt appears.

Click Yes to save the new rule.

The new rule now appears in the list of rules.

Close the window.
