Disabling avast!'s antivirus and e-mail scanning protection:

E-mail is the most common way in which computer viruses are spread, so you should typically have automatic e-mail scanning enabled.  E-mail scanning applies to programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora, Pegasus, etc.  E-mail attachments, html files, etc. will be scanned automatically.  If you are having problems with an e-mail program, turn off avast! Antivirus to ensure avast! Antivirus is not the culprit.  Enabling avast! Antivirus is quite simple.  Do the following:

In the bottom, right-hand corner of your Desktop is the System Tray and, within it, the avast! Antivirus icon.

Right click the avast! Antivirus icon and select On-Access Protection Control from the menu.

A prompt similar to the following may appear:

Enter your password  =  Enter your password to access avast! Antivirus.

Click the OK button to continue.

The avast! On-Access Scanner window appears.

To disable avast! Antivirus, click the Terminate button.

Note:  Clicking the Terminate button will disable not only the automatic e-mail scanning but all of avast!'s protection.  To disable just the e-mail protection, click here.

Click the OK button.

Another way of disabling automatic e-mail scanning is by doing the following:

In the bottom, right-hand corner of your Desktop, right click the avast! Antivirus icon and select Stop Provider -> Internet Mail from the menu.

A prompt similar to the following may appear:

Enter your password  =  Enter your password to permit changes.

Click the OK button to continue.

The avast!: Persist the changes? window appears.

This window asks if you'd like to save the changes even after Windows is restarted.

Unless you do not want avast! running again, click the No button.  This way if you forget to re-enable avast! manually, avast! will re-enable itself when you restart Windows.

  Re-enable Automatic E-mail Scanning:

If automatic e-mail scanning does not re-enable itself after a reboot, do the following:

In the bottom, right-hand corner of your Desktop, right click the avast! Antivirus icon and select On-Access Protection Control from the menu.

A prompt similar to the following may appear:

Enter your password  =  Enter your password to access avast! Antivirus.

Click the OK button to continue.

The avast! On-Access Scanner window appears.

Installed providers:

Scroll down and highlight the icon Internet Mail.

To the right, click the Start button to re-enable automatic e-mail scanning.

Click the OK button.

The avast!: Persist the changes? window appears.

This window asks if you'd like to save the changes even after Windows is restarted.

Unless you do not want avast!'s automatic e-mail scanning running again, click the Yes button.
