BlackIce Defender - Firewall for Microsoft Windows

BlackICE links:  Enabling/Disabling BlackICE |

  Configuring BlackIce Defender:

Occasionally, BlackICE won't allow an application you're trying to run access to the Internet.  You'll need to grant this application access before the program will function properly.  For example, if Internet Explorer won't display Websites, BlackICE may be blocking Internet Explorer's access.  You'll need to verify if BlackICE is the culprit.  Do the following:

In the System Tray, right click the BlackICE icon and select Edit BlackICE Settings from the pop-up menu.

The BlackICE Settings window appears.

Select the Firewall tab.

Protection Level:

The default setting is Paranoid: block all unsolicited inbound traffic.  You can set this to a level with which you're most comfortable.

By checking the box Enable Auto-Blocking, you allow BlackICE to block the incoming traffic.  This takes the burden off you.

Select the Intrusion Detection tab.

If there are sites that require access to your computer, BlackICE will stop their access unless you specify otherwise.  You can allow these sites access by entering their IP address.  Do the following:

Click the Add button.

The Exclude from Reporting window appears.

Addresses to Trust:

IP  =  Enter the IP address of the site for which you're granting access.

Click the Add button.

The newly-added site appears in the list of trusted sites.

Select the Application Control tab.

During installation, BlackICE asks if you would like to enable Application Protection.  If you enable Application Protection, BlackICE verifies which Internet-related programs you have installed on your computer.  It then controls those applications.

If an unknown or modified application tries to access the Internet, BlackICE may/may not inform you.  It depends on the option you've selected:  Ask me what to do or Always terminate the application.

If you begin having trouble with a particular Internet application, it may be due to BlackICE's application protection.  The program may have been modified (you may have updated the application), an Internet dialer (spyware) or a backdoor Trojan may try to access the Internet.  In any case, BlackICE recognizes the application as having been modified, the dialer or Trojan and denies them access.

The best solution for this is to have BlackICE ask you what to do.  If some program you've never heard of tries to access the Internet, you can still terminate it.  If you've recently updated the program, allow it access.
