Norton Personal Firewall 2006 - Microsoft Windows

Links:  Enable/Disable Norton Personal Firewall |

  Configure Norton Personal Firewall:

If you're having trouble browsing, it may be due to Norton's Personal Firewall settings.  You can disable the firewall for troubleshooting purposes.  If you can browse with the firewall disabled, it is probably a setting you'll need to adjust or a program you'll need to allow access.  You should re-enable it after.  The following screenshots explain how to add a new program to Norton's Allow list.

In the System Tray, right click the Norton Internet Security icon and select Open Norton Personal Firewall.

Norton Personal Firewall screen appears.

In the left-hand column, click Norton Personal Firewall.
To the right, highlight Personal Firewall.
In the bottom, right-hand corner, click the Configure button.

The following window appears:

The following settings are the default settings; however, you can change them.

Click the Custom Level button.

The Firewall window appears.

The following settings are the default settings.

Personal Firewall:  As you can see, everything is blocked until you allow it.  If a specific program can't access the Internet, you must allow it first.
Java Applet Security:  Web pages use Java to create interactive content like buttons and forms.  You should allow these.
ActiveX Control Security:  Like Java, ActiveX is used to create interactive content.  You should allow these controls, but be careful not to accept content from sites you know you shouldn't trust.

Click the OK button.

Select the Programs tab.

With the default settings, Norton Personal Firewall only allows programs you add to the Allow list to access the Internet.  You can add those programs here.  You add programs used for Internet purposes like browsers, e-mail and newsgroups clients, FTP clients, etc.

Towards the bottom, left-hand corner, click the Add button.

Look in:  Browse to the program you'd like to add to the Allow list.  In this example, we selected Internet Explorer.
Highlight the program's executable file, e.g., IEXPLORE or IEXPLORE.EXE.

Click the Open button.

The Program Control prompt should appear.

What do you want to do?  Select the option Automatically configure Internet access (Recommended).

Click the OK button.

The program has now been added to the Allow list.

Click the OK button.
