Configuring Opera 6's browser:

This tutorial takes you through the most common functions of Opera's browser.

On the Toolbar, click File and select Preferences

Setting the Home Page:

Highlight Start and exit.

To the right you can set your home page.  The home page is the first page displayed when you launch Opera.  It can be any page you like.

Enabling Java:

Under Fonts and colors, highlight Multimedia.

To enjoy the full functionality of the Internet, you should have the following enabled:

Under the right-hand section Media types, you should have marked Enable Java.

Under the right-hand section JavaScript, mark the box Enable JavaScript.

Default E-mail account:

Under Programs and paths, highlight E-mail.

Choose Use default e-mail client on computer.

Important:  Do NOT choose the option to Use Opera account.  Opera 6's built-in e-mail client does not work with most ISP's SMTP Authentication.  If you want to use Opera for e-mail, upgrade to Opera 7.

Setting Up Newsgroups:

Newsgroups are like bulletin boards on the Internet. They cover a wide variety of topics. Most people don't use them but you can use them with our ISP. Just click the File menu and choose Preferences then click the News option as shown below.

The first box for the "Default news server" is most important.

The news server address is news.ispname.com with your specific ISP's info in place of the ispname.com part.

The other settings are flexible. Just do not put a checkmark in the "Secure" box!

Enabling the Proxy Servers:

Highlight Network.

There are two common reasons to use Proxies:

Filtering:  Web sites are filtered to stop unwanted sites dealing with smut, violence, etc. from reaching your computer.  The proxy address is available from your ISP support center.

Web Acceleration - With BrowseBlast software installed, your Internet connection can be 2 to 5 times faster.  If you have purchased BrowseBlast from your ISP and installed it on your computer, the proxy settings should match those on the right.

IMPORTANT:  Filtering and Web Acceleration are not compatible at this time, since they use different addresses.  You should only purchase one of these services from your ISP.

To configure the proxy servers, click the Proxy servers button.  It's to the right.

Check the box HTTP.

The screen on the left shows settings for Filtering whereas the screen on the right is for BrowseBlast.  The proxy addresses and ports are available from your ISP support center.

Click OK when finished.

Clearing the History and cache:

Highlight History and cache.

The History is list of all the sites visited with your computer.  You can clear this by clicking the two Clear buttons under the History section.

The Cache contains the files, images, and cookies of every website visited with your computer.  You can clear these by clicking the Empty now button under the section Disk cache.

Important:  a full history and cache can impede browsing speed.  You should clear these periodically.

Enabling Cookies:

Highlight Privacy.

Cookies are an important part of the Internet.  Many sites require that they be enabled.  If they are not enabled you will not be able to access certain sites.

To enable cookies, mark the box Enable cookies.  It's to the right.

Note:  you do not have to accept all cookies.  You can click the down arrows and specify how Opera handles cookies.
