Actiontec GT701 — DSL Modem for Microsoft Windows

  Installing the Actiontec GT701 DSL Modem:

The Actiontec has several lights on the front that have various meanings.

Power  =  When lit, this light indicates there's power to the modem.  It should be solid green.
DSL  =  When lit, this light indicates the modem is speaking to the central office (phone company).  When working, the light should be solid green.
Internet  =  When blinking, this light indicates that you're receiving information i.e., you're able to browse from site to site.  This light will be blinking as you're receiving information.
Ethernet  =  When lit, this light indicates that the modem is communicating with your computer.  This will be on only if you're using the Ethernet cable to connect the modem to your computer.  We recommend using the Ethernet cable.
USB  =  When lit, this light indicates that the modem is communicating with your computer.  This will be on only if you're using the USB cable to connect the modem to your computer.  We recommend using the Ethernet cable.

 

You run your cables from the back of the Actiontec modem to the computer and to the DSL jack on your wall.

Phone  =  This port is where you connect your DSL line.  The DSL line connects here and to the DSL jack on the wall.  The information you pull up on the Internet comes through the DSL line to the modem and from the modem through the Ethernet or USB cable to your computer.

Important:  Notice the Ethernet port is larger than the PHONE port.  It uses a differently sized connector.  A regular phone line or DSL line connector will be too small for the Ethernet port.

USB  =  You can either use the USB or Ethernet port to connect the modem to your computer.  We recommend using the Ethernet port.
Ethernet  =  The Ethernet port is used to send information from your computer to the modem and vice versa.  The yellow Ethernet cable (provided) should run from Ethernet port 1 on the back of this modem to the Ethernet port on your computer.

Note:  On your computer, you may have an on-board Ethernet port or an Ethernet port in a PCI slot.  Use whichever one you have.

Reset  =  This button will reset the modem back to factory settings.  Any settings that you have saved will be removed.  You must hold the Reset button in for approximately five seconds to reset the modem.
On/Off  =  Use your imagination.
Power  =  This is where you connect your power supply.  The modem must have power to function.

The Actiontec also comes with the following equipment and software:

Installation CD  =  Use this CD only if you're using the USB cable to connect the Actiontec to the computer.  We recommend using the Ethernet cable.
Power Adapter  =  This supplies power to your modem.
DSL Cable  =  The DSL line connects to the modem and to the DSL jack on the wall.  The information you pull up on the Internet comes through the DSL line to the modem and from the modem to your computer through the Ethernet cable.
USB Cable  =  A light blue cable that connects the modem to the computer.  Use this cable only if you don't want to connect the modem to the computer with the Ethernet cable.  We recommend using the Ethernet cable.
Ethernet Cable  =  A bright, yellow cable that connects the Actiontec modem to the computer.  This is how information is transferred from your computer to the modem and vice versa.  We recommend using the Ethernet cable instead of the USB cable.
Filters  =  These devices are designed for your phone lines (not you DSL line).  They filter out the DSL signals so you don't hear the screeching and squealing of the Internet while your talking on your phone.  Do not place one of these filters on your DSL line.  It will filter out the signals your DSL uses for the Internet.
