Installing the SpeedStream 4100 DSL Modem:

The Westell has several lights on the front that have various meanings.

Power  =  When lit, this light indicates there's power to the router.  It should be solid green.
Ethernet  =  When lit, this light indicates that the modem is communicating with your computer.  This will be on only if you're using the Ethernet cable to connect the modem to your computer.
DSL  =  When lit, this light indicates the modem is speaking to the central office (phone company).  When working, the light should be solid green.
Internet  =  When lit, this light indicates you're connected to the Internet.
Activity  =  When blinking, this light indicates that you're receiving information i.e., you're able to browse from site to site.  This light will only blink as you're sending/receiving data.

You run your cables from the back of the Westell router to the computer and to the DSL jack on your wall.

DSL  =  This port is where you connect your DSL line.  The DSL line connects here and to the DSL jack on the wall.  The information you pull up on the Internet comes through the DSL line to the router and from the router through the Ethernet cable to your computer.

Important:  Notice the DSL port is smaller than the Ethernet port.  It uses a differently sized connector.  A regular phone line or DSL line connector will be too small for the Ethernet port.

Reset  =  This button will reset the router back to factory settings.  Any settings that you have saved will be removed.  You must hold the Reset button in for approximately five seconds to reset the router.
Ethernet  =  The Ethernet port is used to send information from your computer to the router and vice versa.

Note:  On your computer, you may have an on-board Ethernet port or an Ethernet port in a PCI slot.  Use whichever one you have.

12VDC  =  This is where you connect your power supply.  The router must have power to function.
I/O  =  This is your On/Off button.

The SpeedStream also comes with the following equipment and software:

Quick Start Guide  =  Comes with an installation CD for installing SpeedStream drivers.
Power Adapter  =  This helps supply power to your router.
Ethernet Cable  =  A bright, yellow cable that connects the Actiontec router to the computer.  This is how information is transferred from your computer to the router and vice versa.  We recommend using the Ethernet cable instead of the USB cable.
DSL Cable  =  The DSL line connects to the router and to the DSL jack on the wall.  The information you pull up on the Internet comes through the DSL line to the router and from the router to your computer through the Ethernet cable.
Filters  =  Devices to filter the DSL frequency so you can talk on your phone.
