Editing an existing connection:

To edit an existing connection, do the following:

On the Desktop, double click the My Computer icon.

 

Double click the Dial-Up Networking folder.

 

Right click the desired connection and select Properties from the menu.

 

The following window appears:

Select the General tab.

Phone number:

Uncheck the option Use area code and Dialing Properties.

Area code  =  This should be grayed out.

Telephone number  =  Verify the Access number you use to connect to the Internet.  This is provided by your Internet service provider.  Enter any other numbers necessary to connect.  For example, if you have 10-digit dialing in your area, enter the area code along with the phone number.  If you have Call Waiting and would like to disable it while you're on the Internet, enter "*70," before the access number, i.e., *70,3125555555.  If you're in a hotel and need to dial a "9," to get an outside line, enter it as well.

Country code  =  This should be grayed out.

 

Connect using:

Select the modem from the drop-down menu.  There should only be one listed.

Click the Configure button. 

 

A window similar to the following appears:

Maximum speed  =  Set the speed to 57600.

Click the OK button to save the changes.

 

We return to the following window:

Select the Server Types tab.

Type of Dial-Up Server  =  Ensure PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98 is selected.

Advanced options:

Check the box Enable software compression.

Leave all other fields in this section blank.

Allowed network protocols:

Check the box TCP/IP.

You can leave all other fields in this section blank.

Click the TCP/IP Settings button.

 

The TCP/IP Settings window appears.

Ensure the option Server assigned IP address is selected.

It's not necessary but you can select the option Specify name server addresses.

If selected, enter the following:

Primary DNS  =  209.210.176.8
Secondary DNS  =  209.210.176.9

Check the boxes Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.

Click the OK button to save any changes and to close the window.

 

We return to the following window:

Click the OK button to close the window.

 

We return to the Dial-Up Networking window.

Double click the connection.

 

The Connect To window appears.

User name  =  Enter the username provided by your Internet service provider.  Be sure to add the domain tail to the end of the username (@ispname.com).
Password  =  Enter your password.

If you'd like to save the password, check the box Save password.

Note:  If you modified the username and/or password here, Windows will only save the changes if you connect to the Internet.  If you don't connect, Windows will revert back to the old settings.
