Windows NT - Edit an existing connection

Edit an existing connection:

To edit an existing connection in Windows NT, do the following:

On the Desktop, double click the My Computer icon.

 

The My Computer window appears.

Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon.

 

The Dial-Up Networking  window appears.

Phonebook entry to dial  =  From the menu, select the connection you'd like to edit.

Click the More button and select Edit entry and modem properties.

 

The Edit Phonebook Entry window appears.

Select the Basic tab.

Entry name  =  Give the connection a name such as the name of your ISP.
Phone number  =  Enter the Access number you use to connect to the Internet.  This is provided by your Internet service provider.  Enter any other numbers necessary to connect.  For example, if you have 10-digit dialing in your area, enter the area code along with the phone number.  If you have Call Waiting and would like to disable it while you're on the Internet, enter "*70," before the access number, i.e., *70,3125555555.  If you're in a hotel and need to dial a "9," to get an outside line, enter it as well.
Dial using  =  This entry represents the modem installed on your computer.

Click the Configure button.

 

The Modem Configuration window appears.

Initial speed (bps)  =  Select the option 57600 from the menu.

Hardware Features:

Check the box Enable hardware flow control.
Check the box Enable modem error control.
Check the box Enable modem compression.

Click the OK button to save any changes.

 

We return to the Edit Phonebook Entry window.

Select the Server tab.

Dial-up server type  =  This should be set to PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet.

Network protocols:

Check the box TCP/IP.

Click the TCP/IP Settings button.

 

The PPP TCP/IP Settings window appears.

Ensure the option Server assigned IP address is selected.

It's not required but if you're having trouble accessing Web pages, do the following:

Select the option Specify name server addresses.

Primary DNS  =  Enter the principal DNS number of 209.210.176.8.
Secondary DNS  =  Enter the alternate DNS number of 209.210.176.9.

Check the boxes Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.

Click the OK button to save the changes.

 

We return to the Edit Phonebook Entry window.

Select the Script tab.

After dialing (login):

Select the None option.

 

Select the Security tab.

Authentication and encryption policy:

Ensure the option Accept any authentication including clear text.

 

Select the X.25 tab.

All fields should be like the fields below.  There is no reason to use these for a dial-up connection to the Internet.

Click the OK button to close the window.

 

We return to the Dial-Up Networking window.

Click the Close button.

 

Create a shortcut to the connection:

You can create a shortcut to the connection for your Desktop.

Within My Computer, right click the Dial-Up Networking icon and select Create Shortcut from the menu.

 

The following window appears:

Windows cannot create a shortcut here.  That's OK.

Click the Yes button to put it on the Desktop.

 

A Shortcut to Dial-Up Networking icon appears on the Desktop.

Double click the shortcut.

 

The Dial-Up Networking window appears.

Click the Dial button.

 

The Connect to... window appears.

User name  =  Enter the dial-up username provided you by your Internet service provider (including the domain @ispname.com).
Password  =  Enter your dial-up password.

Note:  Passwords are case-sensitive.  Ensure your Caps Lock key is DISabled.

Check the option Save password.

Click the OK button to connect to the Internet.

Note:  Open your browser after connecting.
