Windows NT - Create a new connection

Create a new connection:

To create a new connection in Windows NT, do the following:

On the Desktop, double click the My Computer icon.


The My Computer window appears.

Double click the Dial-Up Networking icon.


The Dial-Up Networking  window appears.

Click the New button.


Name the new phonebook entry  =  Enter a name for the connection such as the name of your ISP.

Click the Next button to continue.


Check all that apply:

Check the option I am calling the Internet.
Check the option Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect.

Click the Next button to continue.


Phone number  =  Enter the Access number you use to connect to the Internet.  This is provided by your Internet service provider.  Enter any other numbers necessary to connect.  For example, if you have 10-digit dialing in your area, enter the area code along with the phone number.  If you have Call Waiting and would like to disable it while you're on the Internet, enter "*70," before the access number, i.e., *70,3125555555.  If you're in a hotel and need to dial a "9," to get an outside line, enter it as well.

Click the Next button to continue.


That's it.

Click the Finish button to complete the initial configuration.


You're ready to connect to the Internet.

Click the Dial button to connect.


Create a shortcut to the connection:

You can create a shortcut to the connection for your Desktop.

Within My Computer, right click the Dial-Up Networking icon and select Create Shortcut from the menu.


The following window appears:

Windows cannot create a shortcut here.  That's OK.

Click the Yes button to put it on the Desktop.


A Shortcut to Dial-Up Networking icon appears on the Desktop.

Double click the shortcut.


The Dial-Up Networking window appears.

Click the Dial button.


The Connect to... window appears.

User name  =  Enter the dial-up username provided you by your Internet service provider (including the domain
Password  =  Enter your dial-up password.

Note:  Passwords are case-sensitive.  Ensure your Caps Lock key is DISabled.

Check the option Save password.

Click the OK button to connect to the Internet.

Note:  Open your browser after connecting.
