WS_FTP LE Overview:

WS_FTP_LE is a popular FTP Client for transferring large files.  It is free -- provided at no charge.  It is the free version (LE stands for Limited Edition) fo WS_FTP_PRO.  You can download it from www.ipswitch.com or from sites like www.tucows.com or www.download.com.

It lets you establish one ftp session at a time, and only remembers the last site you've used.  So if you have multiple sites to connect to at the same time, it is not the best choice.

Key Settings:

FTP Host/Address = follows this format: users.ispname.com

Initial Remote Directory = Typically, no directory, initial remote directory or path.

Login/UserID = your username@ispname.com which will route you to the right directory.

Personal Website URL = The address of your website will follow this format: http://users.ispname.com/username

 

Connect to your FTP Site:

After openening WS_FTP_LE, click the Connect button in the bottom-left corner.

 

After clicking the Connect button , the Session Properties windows opens, as shown below.

Host Name/Address = follows this format: users.ispname.com. No directory, initial remote directory or path.

User ID = follows this format: username@ispname.com (which will route you to the right directory)

 

Click the Startup tab to see the screen below.

Do not enter an Initial Remote Site Folder, initial remote directory or path. Your username@ispname.com will route you to the right directory.

Once you've configured your connection, click the OK button and WS_FTP_LE will connect to your FTP site.

Note: Personal Website URL: The address of your website will follow this format: http://users.ispname.com/username This is the web address where other people will go to see your website.

 

Transfer Files and Folders:

Once connected, WS_FTP_LE's window looks like the one below.

The white box on the left shows files on your computer.  

The white box on the right shows files on your ftp personal web site.

To transfer files, highlight a file and then click the corresponding left arrow or right arrow button.

 

Disconnect from the FTP Server:

When you have finished transferring files, you can disconnect from the FTP server by clicking the Close button at the bottom right.  

The close button then turns into a Connect button .  Clicking the connect button will reopen the Session Properties windows described at the top of the page. (Click here to go up.)
