WS_FTP Pro Overview:

WS_FTP Pro is a popular FTP Client for transferring large files.  It can be downloaded for evaluation purposes, after which you must purchase it.  You can download it from www.ipswitch.com or from sites like www.tucows.com or www.download.com.

It lets you establish one ftp session at a time, but keeps track of sites for future use.

Key Settings:

FTP Host/Address = follows this format: users.ispname.com

Initial Remote Directory = Typically, no directory, initial remote directory or path.

Login/UserID = your username@ispname.com which will route you to the right directory.

Personal Website URL = The address of your website will follow this format: http://users.ispname.com/username

 

Create a new configuration:

 To open the site manager, click File, then Connect.  

You can also click the Connect button at the top-left, or the Connect button at the bottom-left.

 

Highlight the MySites folder and click the Create Site button   .

 

After clicking the Create Site button, the following Wizard appears.

Name this profile whatever you'd like.  Then click Next.

 

 

Host Name or IP Address = follows this format: users.ispname.com.

Click Next.

 

 

User ID = follows this format: username@ispname.com

Note: Personal Website URL: The address of your website will follow this format: http://users.ispname.com/username This is the web address where other people will go to see your website.

Click Next.

 

 The correct Server Type is FTP.  Click Next.

 

Leave the Host Type set to Automatic detect.  Click Next.

 

Click Finish.

 

Edit existing FTP settings:

To check the settings for your FTP connection, click the File menu, then Connect.

You can also click the Connect button at the top-left, or the Connect button at the bottom-left.

 

After clicking the Connect button , the Site Options windows opens, as shown below.

Host Name = follows this format: users.ispname.com. No directory, initial remote directory or path.

User ID = follows this format: username@ispname.com (which will route you to the right directory)

 

Click the Startup tab to see the screen below.

Do not enter a Remote Site Folder. Your username@ispname.com will route you to the right directory.

Once you've configured your connection, click the OK button.

Connect:

To check the settings for your FTP connection, click the File menu, then Connect.

You can also click the Connect button at the top-left, or the Connect button at the bottom-left.

 

The site manager opens, as shown below.

Choose your site, and then click the Connect button .

 

Transfer Files and Folders:

Once connected, WS_FTP Pro's window looks like the one below.

The white box on the left shows files on your computer.  

The white box on the right shows files on your ftp personal web site.

To transfer files, highlight a file and then click the corresponding left arrow or right arrow button.

You can also "drag-and-drop" files between the two windows, or even directly between the program and your computer.

 

Disconnect from the FTP Server:

When you have finished transferring files, you can disconnect from the FTP server by clicking the Disconnect button at the top-left   , or the Disconnect button at the bottom-left.  

The disconnect button then turns into a Connect button .  Clicking the connect button will reopen the site manager windows described at the top of the page.
