Setting up additional users in Opera 7 (Part 2):

Welcome to the second step in setting up an additional profile in Opera 7.  Don't give up yet, we're almost done.

In this tutorial, we'll configure the new profile to point to the folder we created in Part 1.

Right click anywhere on the desktop and select New -> Shortcut from the menus.

A window similar to the following will appear.

In the field, Type the location of the item (in Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 it's 'Command line'), you can enter the path to the Opera 7 program, or you can browse to it.  In this tutorial, I will browse to it.

Click Browse.

The Browse For Folder window appears.

Locate the My Computer and double click it to expand its menu.

Locate the Program Files folder and double click it to expand its menu.

Locate the Opera 7 folder and double click it to expand its menu.

Locate opera.exe and highlight it.

Click OK (or Open).

The path to the Opera executable is now shown in the field below.

Important:  note the quotation marks around the path.  The quotation marks are necessary because there is a space between the words 'Program' and 'Files'.  You'll need to remember this later on.

Click Next to continue.

Type a name for this shortcut  =  give the short cut a distinctive name.  This we'll help avoid confusion if you decide to make other profiles.  In this example, I gave the shortcut the name 'John Boy's Opera Profile'.

Click Finish.

The Opera 7 shortcut with its new name now appears on the desktop.

We still need to do some additional configuration.

Right click Opera 7's shortcut and select Properties from the menu.

The Shortcut's Properties window appears.

If it's not already selected, click the Shortcut tab.

There are two fields of which you should take note:  Target and Start in.

Target  =

1.  there is already a path to Opera's executable.  Leave it there and put a space after it.

2.  we'll type /Settings and then another space.

3.  now we'll enter the path to the new .ini file we created 'Part 1'.  In the previous tutorial I named the new .ini file 'Opera7.ini'.  Its path was C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\John Boy's\Opera7.ini.  Since there are spaces between 'Documents and Settings', ''My' and 'Documents', as well as a space between 'John' and 'Boy's', we'll need to put the path in quotations.

So, the Target field should contain the following:

"C:\Program Files\Opera7\opera.exe" /Settings "C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\John Boy's\Opera7.ini".

Important:  again, since the paths have spaces in them, you need the quotation marks.  If you have no spaces, you do not need to place the paths in quotation marks.

Start in  =  this field contains the path to the directory in which Opera is installed.  In this case, "C:\Program Files\Opera7" is entered.

Important: Ensure that the path you enter is correct.  Windows will not allow you to save the changes unless the path is a valid one.  Remember the quotation marks as well.

Click OK when finished.

Note:  you must still create an e-mail account for the newly created profile.  The account wizard should start when you launch Opera.  Click here to learn how to create an e-mail account.
