Key Settings: 

The News server usually follows this format: news.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

Note:  Your ISP may require you to enable NNTP authentication.

 

  Editing an existing newsgroups account:

To edit existing accounts, do the following:

On the Toolbar, click Mail and select Newsgroups from the menu.

 

The Manage accounts window opens.

Highlight the news account and click the Edit button.

 

You've now accessed your news account's properties.

Account name  =  By default, Opera gives the name of the account the name of the news server.  You can, however, call it anything you wish.

Full name  =  Verify the spelling of your name.
Mail address  =  Verify the spelling of your e-mail address.

 

Enabling NNTP & SMTP Authentication:

Select the Servers tab.

NNTP authentication is required to connect to the news server and respond or post news as well.  NNTP authentication is as simple as entering a username and a password.

NNTP server:  This is where you can modify the news server information.

Server  =  Enter the address of your news server.  It follows this format:  news.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.

Note:  Your ISP may require you to enable NNTP authentication.

Port number  =  This should be the default news port:  119.

Your ISP may require you to enable NNTP authentication.  To enable NNTP authentication, do the following:

Authentication:  Select Auto from the menu.
Username  =  Enter the full username of your Internet connection.
Password  =  Enter the password of you Internet connection.

Important:  Passwords are case-sensitive.  Ensure the Caps Lock is disabled.

Outgoing SMTP server:

Server  =  The Outgoing (SMTP) mail server usually follows this format: mail.ispname.com (or .net).  Replace the "ispname.com (or .net)" with your ISP's name.
Port number  =  This should be the default news port:  25.
Authentication:  Select Auto from the menu.
Username  =  Enter the username of your e-mail address (everything before the @ symbol).
Password  =  Enter the password of you Internet connection.

Important:  Passwords are case-sensitive.  Ensure the Caps Lock is disabled.

Click the OK button.

 

We're back the the Manage accounts window.

Click the Close button.

 

To download and view newsgroups, you must subscribe to them.  Do the following:

Right click the news account and select Newsgroups from the menu.

 

The Subscribe newsgroups window appears.

Opera downloads a list of available newsgroups.

Check the newsgroups categories to which you'd like to subscribe and click the OK button.

 

Opera lists the newsgroups you subscribed to under the account.

Highlight one of the newsgroups categories.

The category appears to the right and displays all available postings for the category.

Click the View icon to read the postings or the Compose icon to create and post to newsgroups.
