  Backing up you e-mail:

If you feel you need to reinstall Outlook 2000, you may want to back up your saved e-mail messages.  Outlook saves your saved e-mails as a .pst file.  Any e-mails you have saved are in this file.  Below is a tutorial on how to retrieve these files.

Click Start, select Search (for Windows 95/98, click 'Find'), and then For Files or Folders from the menu.

The Search Results window appears.

In the left column, under Search for files or folders named, enter *.pst.

In the left column, under Look in, select your local hard drive (usually C:).

Click Search Now.

After the .pst files are located, note the folder in which Outlook stores them.

Note:  in Windows 2000 and XP, they are usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

Note:  in Windows 95/98/Me/ and NT, the .pst files are usually located in C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

After the .pst files are located, on the Toolbar, click Edit and choose Select All from the menu.

After the files are highlighted, on the Toolbar, click Edit and select Copy from the menu.

On the Desktop or in folder of your choice (My Documents, for example), right click and select Paste from the menu.

They are now on the Desktop or in a folder other than that of Outlook's.  You can now uninstall and then reinstall Office 2000.

Note:  after reinstalling Office 2000, you'll want to place the files back in the folder from which you took them.
